When I think about gifts for writers I often think at a gift for me – it is a bit hard and challenging to get a gift for a writer. They are those metaphorical, mystical and dreamy people who always think of things from 1000 perspectives before settling on something, but I have found out that there are some presents which work good for them. Are these presents hard to get or expensive? Not at all – they are just some items which come in handy for a writer, especially if they are still writing the old way, with pen and paper.
Which are the best gifts for writers?
Yes, writers can sometimes be difficult people. They have mood swings; they have days when they stay in their room writing; but at the end of the day, they are there with a big smile and a cup of tea or a coffee mug onto which it’s written “Writer of the day”. See where I’m getting? There are some items which never fail when gifted to a writer, so let’s go over them one at a time. ![]()
Personalized coffee mug
If you want your present to be one of the unique gifts for writers, then you should definitely look at a personalized coffee mug. You can find a lot of models online which are already personalized with a funny, sincere or motivational message and they come really cheap. And let’s not forget, you can always make your own personalized coffee mug gift and I am sure that your loved one will appreciate it a lot.
When is this present not appropriate? Well, if you will go into a very formal setting such as a dinner, a book launch ceremony or a wine-tasting event it is not advised to bring a personalized coffee mug but rather another present. It is true that many times the writer will love the mug and consider it to be a nice present, but the setting is not the best one for giving such a gift – you should instead give a wine or a pen at the official event and keep the mug with the funny message for a more private moment.
A professional writing pen
This is a tricky present – it is one of the best gifts for aspiring writers who will receive it and open a new page of their life with it, while on the other hand it can be a somewhat redundant item for someone who uses the PC to write. Make sure you know the person you are gifting this pen so you don’t get it wrong.
I’ve found some of the cheapest and most interesting pens on Amazon, but you can get yours even from the local store. My personal favorites are the Rosewood Pen Set you can see in the picture added to this post and the Engraved Leather Wrapped Pen. They have something to them which differentiates them from the rest – a personal touch combined with a classy and serious exterior that will make their owner feel proud of them for a long period of time from now on.
Desk items for writers
Aren’t you just annoyed when you can’t find a stapler, a paper clip or a place to store some papers? Well, organizing your desk is not just a matter of being a tidy and organized person, but more of having the necessary items to store everything you have lying on the desk. A good gift for someone who always wants to stay organized is a set of desk items for writers.
These items are never a wrong gift because you can always find some use for the desk items. A small pen holder, a paper tray or a pencil sharpener are just some of the ones which can be added to such a set. It is a matter of personal taste what you choose to buy if you buy the items separately, but when you acquire them together this is what you get in the set. Don’t forget a nice and trendy wrapping to go with it!
A book about writing
For some of us (me included, of course), writing is not just a hobby, but also a job. As with any job, you can have good moments when you write 200 pages in one week or bad moments when days pass without being able to focus on something. This is just the way things go – the human mind has to rest from time to time.
A good book would be the perfect gift you can give someone who is in the search for inspiration. It can be a funny booklet about the art of writing or a novel about motivation and getting there after some work – anything goes as long as you know what the person you are gifting it likes to read. Also, remember the age of the writer because gifts for young writers should always be more relaxing and funny, while the older and more experienced ones have a more mature approach on reading.

Can I make such a gift myself?
Can you make a gift for a writer yourself? If you have landed on the Shape a Smile website for the first time, then you should probably know that I strongly encourage you to make personalized and hand-made gifts. They have a plus of personality which differentiates them from the rest – they are a physical item wrapped with a bit of love.
Almost every item from the above ones can be personalized – as an example you can look at the Simple Personalized Coffee Mug – how to do it? tutorial to see how to paint a mug or you can buy a cheap set of desk accessories made from ceramics and personalize them at will. (Make sure to drop me a request and I can make a tutorial on that)
Moreover, I would still try to keep in mind the things said in the Which are the best gifts for writers? section from above. From my experience these are the best gifts for writers you can find out there and you’ll never go wrong with them.

Here we are at the end of another post from Shape a Smile, but I must confess this post has meant a lot to me because I am a writer myself and I could think of the things I love to receive on Christmas, my birthday or just any special event. Remember to wrap everything with a bit of love, and don’t forget to tell us all which are the best gifts you made or you, as a writer, have received.
